Why You Should Be Reading Part Time Vagabond

Vag ∙ uh ∙ bond – moving from place to place without a fixed home

It occurs to me that not everyone understands what a Part Time Vagabond is, or even if they can consider themselves one. As a result, it’s hard to know whether this blog is targeted to them. So here’s a quick explanation.

Sailing on Casco Bay with Baxter Brewing Crew

I think we all like to get away every once in awhile. Most Americans accrue time during the year so that they can escape work for a week or two, avoiding the mental breakdown that we all know is lurking just below the surface. American’s work. A lot. More than most countries, in fact, and with all that work comes an unreasonable amount of stress. And all that work doesn’t necessarily mean more productivity. We just spend more time at work. I don’t think that’s healthy, and we’ve seen time and time again that it’s really not.

“…there’s nothing more important that you can do with your life than to experience different cultures and see how different people live and see all the amazing variety of life in the world.” – Photographer Steve McCurry

For many of us, traveling—whether camping at a park an hour away or tramping through a country on the other side of the world—is the perfect reset button. We want to travel, to see the world, to know what lies beyond our borders. We see the Tim Ferriss‘s of the world, the ones “working” from some tropical beach, laptop in front of them, fruity drink in hand, and wonder how they do it, and believe we never can. Or maybe we just don’t want to live the wanderer’s life all the time. Maybe it sounds exhausting, and we like the recharge that home gives us. Whatever the case, the term wanderlust is always on the tip of our tongue. We feel the pull, we want to go, but something holds us back. Most often, that something comes in the form of family responsibility, or money, or fear.

If you feel all of these things—if you love experiencing new cultures and seeing new sights, but you can’t or don’t want to make that a full time lifestyle—then the Part Time Vagabond lifestyle is for you. If none of that appeals to you, there will still be content here for you on Part Time Vagabond. The point of PTV is that travel should be an important part of our lives, helping us to become better, more empathetic, and more productive citizens of the world.
